SPINNERS/PROJECT CIRCLE
Bring your wheel or spindle to sample FREE alpaca (and alpaca blended) spinning fibers, as well as a small 'buffet' of fibers you may not have tried before. Not interested in spinning? That's okay, just bring whatever fibery project you are working on and join us at any time during show hours for conversation, sharing and companionship.

MINI WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

Instead of bringing longer classes and workshops that take several hours to partake in, we have designed very short 30-45 minute hands on workshops that are easy to fit in between classes in the show ring. You will be taught techniques by doing very small projects that are easily transferrable to larger projects that you can do at home, or that you can in turn teach your clients and open farm day attendees.

And best of all? They are completely FREE thanks to the Alpaca Owners Association.

On setup/check in day (Thursday) we will have sign up sheets for all workshops laid out on a table at the Alpaca Fiber Solutions booth - just come at any time during the show and put your name down for anything you'd like to participate in. We strongly suggest you do this to guarantee a spot in any of the workshops due to the limited number of participants we can have per session.

All workshops, demonstrations and fiber activities will take place in the Alpaca Fiber Solutions area

Making a bird nesting ball | 30-45 mins
bird nesting ball

Roo Kline wrote a 'how to' article on making your own bird nesting balls for the Spring 2014 issue of American Livestock Magazine. In this mini workshop Roo and participants will make a bird nesting ball to take home using seconds and thirds in a selection of natural and dyed colours.

SPECIAL NOTE: although this mini workshop is free and all fiber and twine is provided, the grape vine balls are expensive for us to purchase. We ask that participants bring their own 4" grape vine ball to class. These can be purchased ahead of time from craft and hobby stores such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby, or at the show from the Alpaca Fiber Solutions booth ($3.99).

Needle felting a simple cat toy | 30-45 mins
felted cat toy

Using dyed alpaca fiber, catnip, cookie cutters and felting needles, participants will make a simple cat toy.

Soap felting | 30-45 mins
felted soap

Felted soaps provide lots of healthy skin exfoliation when used, and are a very popular item to make and sell. Learn how to felt your own soap with alpaca fiber and bubble wrap.

Carding an embellished alpaca fiber batt | 45-60 mins
carding alpaca fiber

Dyed alpaca fiber sells for $4-$5 per ounce, but whe carded with some luxurious blending fibers and bit of sparkle, the price goes up to $7-$9 per ounce. During this super popular mini workshop participants will card a beautiful alpaca batt on a Strauch Petite drum carder using dyed fiber and embellishings.

Triloom weaving | 60+ mins
triloom weaving

Using the continuous strand method, participants will learn how to weave on a mini triloom, attach fringing, and take their project off the loom. The method taught can be applied to all triloom sizes. This class is last on the schedule on Saturday to allow those who may be slower at grasping the technique can finish their project if it takes longer.

Knitting With fiber (for the non-spinner) | 45-60 mins
knitting with fiber

Knit fiber WITHOUT having to spin it into yarn first. In this workshop led by Elizabeth Taylor participants will explore knitting alpaca batts, roving, and locks, as well as a small selection of other fibers including silk hankies, creating a project with lots of texture.

DEMONSTRATION: Skirting a show fleece | <60 mins
skirting a show fleece

Nervous about unrolling that show fleece and getting it ready for the show? Patty will demonstrate how to skirt a fleece and answer any questions onlookers may have.

Patty Fuller (Poplar Hill Alpacas) is the Spin-off Administrator for
the Sunshine State Alpaca Expo, Carolina Alpaca Celebration, AOBA Nationals, VAOBA Expo and the MAPACA Jubilee.

DEMONSTRATION: Preparing a spin-off sample | <60 mins
spin off samples

Patty will share spin-off tips, show onlookers how to avoid common mistakes when prepping a fiber sample and answer any questions they may have.
